Biography

Jacobus van Well is geboren in Limburg na 1811

Birth

Jacobus van Well is born on December 13, 1824 in Ottersum, Limburg, United Kingdom by of the Netherlands, son of Jacobus van Well (1787 - 1854) and Maria van der Loo (1803 - 1873). [1] [2] Witnesses were Peter Gossens (49 years, farmer), Doris Jansen (49 years, ’kuiper’ in Gennep).

Historical context

The administration of Gennep and Ottersum changed several times: Kleefs (1441), Prussian (1609), French (1794), Dutch (1815), Belgian (1830) and finally Dutch (1839). Jacobus was born in the United Kingdom by of the Netherlands First Republic. When the French occupiers were pushed back and Willem I was crowned king of the Northern and Southern Netherlands (Belgium). Both countries are merged in 1815 through the Congress of Vienna, where the Europe after Napoleon is reformed. The United Kingdom of the Netherlands was founded as a buffer between France and Germany. Fifteen years later there the Catholic south is not happy with a protestant king and In 1830, Jacobus was 6 years old, Belgium separated from the United Kingdom by of the Netherlands. Between 1830 and 1839 Ottersum was the northernmost of the new Kingdom of Belgium.

The London Treaty [3] put an end to this situation. The part of the province of Limburg that was retained for the Kingdom was given a status similar to a part of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg: a duchy of the German Union in personal union with the Netherlands. Although Dutch Limburg became part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in 1839, Limburg MPs were not allowed to vote on the Constitution of 1840. This had to do with the special position of Limburg (with the exception of the fortified towns of Maastricht and Venlo as part of the German federation, a state federation of German states. This status of the Duchy of Limburg came to an end in 1867 after the German League was dissolved. Since then, Limburg is an ordinary province of the Netherlands.
